God is opening my eyes to my environment and what is going on in the world. I am not just noticing it more and more but what my eyes are seeing is bringing about a true sadness and concern.

Of late I am seeing more vagrants or persons who are looking destitute. I am seeing more persons in my area liming aimlessly late at night with little direction. From an economic standpoint I know of many persons who are out of a job or without steady income due to the Covid19 Pandemic. All I can say to this is, “We live, but in a dying world!”

I am sure that I am not alone in my observations and concerns as this would be affecting us all. Given this state which I believe will only get worse, we are given options. I believe that these options can be narrowed down into two choices. These choices are:

  1. Am I going to continually hold on to the world even more?
  2. Am I going to let go of this world and press on to God?

Believe it or not, these are the only two options we have. To hold on to what we see or let go and trust the God we do not see, but who is clearly seen (Romans 1:20-22)

These are two important choices and they are fundamentally opposite from each other. Well, the direction and outcomes are opposite but the efforts are the same. Therefore, if the efforts and energies are the same, then why not direct them to the best choice?

There are persons right now who are thinking, “I have lost my job and I have to press toward getting a new job quickly or opening my own business”. Some might think, “They have to take their money and make better investments because a global recession is imminent”. Others are simply striving to daily face this rat race and are barely staying afloat. We have to do these things to have a comfortable standard of living, but I say to you, “please be careful what you are holding on to and making the centrepiece of your existence”. Now is not the time to be holding on to the wrong thing and placing all your eggs in the worldly basket. Not only this but every decision must be heavenly God directed.

What I have noticed is this. God brings things into our lives in order to detach and disconnect us from this world because he wants all our focus for Himself. Remember no man can serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). Therefore, when He realizes that our priorities are skewed and we are holding on to the wrong thing He intervenes and takes the material things away or takes Himself away. And trust me, the removal of any or both is not nice. Remembering that this type of chastisement is done in love because He disciplines who He loves (Hebrews 12:6).

God wants to point us back to Him. He wants us to stop and consider our ways. He wants us to love Him anew, love Him more than ever before, and love Him with all our might. This is the love He expects and this is the love He deserves. But in order to give Him this we cannot continually be holding on to worldly things, we cannot constantly be holding on to our ways of thinking, we cannot repeatedly be adopting the same attitudes and behaviours to our detriment. It is time to STOP!.

Therefore, I ask you today, “what are you holding on to?”. This is not a question to ponder on lightly or simply glance over. If it does not cause you to pause and sit back in your chair then by God you are missing a life changing opportunity of reflection.  So then let us do that! Sit back and acutely look at the man in the mirror for moment.

What did your examination show? Any cracks in your armour? Is there any belief, mindset, attitude or behaviour, person, or possession that you need to let go off for the sake of your soul?

Sometimes we have to let go of the simplest of things and please allow me to share a recent experience which highlights this. About two weeks ago I was on vacation so I decided to visit our beautiful sister Island of Tobago. I booked to stay in an expensive hotel with a lovely oceanic view and I had some sun, sand, and sea and ate great food. Then I came back home to Trinidad feeling basically the same (Dane with sad face on).

Then just before my 3-week vacation ended, I spent 5 hours none stop just worshiping and reading God’s word in my gallery at home. My friends let me tell you something, let me tell you something…!!! That experience lit a fire in my soul, and God filled me with so much joy, peace, and happiness you would not believe – Hallelujah to the Highest. God had to show me that I was holding on to and relying on earthly things to satisfy my spiritual soul.

Believers are spiritual beings; spiritual beings cannot hold on to physical things and expect to survive or succeed. This experience gave me belief again that there is hope out of this dying world and that the way out is paved by the Lord Jesus Christ (John 14:6).

Friends I encourage you as I encourage myself to close our heart to the things of this world that we falsely believe can satisfy. Our home and our heart should not be earthly bound but we should look for a home who’s builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11:10). I am also happy to say that this home has already been provided (John 14:3). Now it is up to us to decide if we truly want to go there. Lets let go of this dying world and remember that Heaven is our home, therefore we must set all our affections there.
