Hello Dear Friends.

This week I was chatting with a friend at work and he mentioned how difficult things were for him when he first joined our company. He indicated that the salary was not what he expected and for a long while, things were not as it should have been. However, since then, his remuneration has increased, and he is happier now. But during this conversation, something he said stood out in my mind. My colleague indicated he did not give up and noted the fact that in life “sometimes all you have to do is keep moving and doing good”.

His statement jumped out at me and this was mainly because he was so right! Many of us give up before our time (The Only Way is Forward) or simply throw in the towel and stop doing good. We not only stop doing good to persons around us, but sometimes we even stop doing good to ourselves. This could have been caused because of the hurt we suffered at the hands of others or simply because the issues of life have worn us thin or even tiny.

In no way, I want to advocate that pulling ourselves out of a slump is a simple thing. Even the best of us are challenged to push past the pain and hurt and rise to the occasion, or put another way, “rise to a better you”. This is something you have to do for yourself before it is too late.

If you have been hurt, then still continue to do good, forgive and love. Love covers a multitude of sins. If you slipped and fell in your Christian walk, then don’t stay there. Get up and keep doing good, good in the Lord and for the Lord. Let nothing or anyone steal your heavenly inheritance from you.

Although it might seem hard in the moment, doing good to others is like doing good to yourself. It is something you do to benefit you. It is something you do now to benefit your future self. Let’s look at what God says about it in scripture.

Proverbs 11:25 25 A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Psalms 112:9 9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor.

Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Proverbs 22:9 The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.

Proverbs 28:27 27 Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.

Psalms 41:1-3 1 Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. 2 The Lord protects and preserves them – they are counted among the blessed in the land he does not give them over to the desire of their foes. 3 The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.

As we can see, there are so many examples of how doing good to others and blessing them also benefits us in return. I personally love the next example of this, where I single out Cornelius from the book of Acts. This one is close to my heart because he was not only doing good by giving to others, but he was also spiritually doing good by praying for many and God was watching all his actions closely. Cornelius had an encounter with an angel that went like this.

“Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God”. – Acts 10:4

God was saying via this angel that all the good work of praying for others and helping the poor has not gone unnoticed by Him. When earthly men were not watching, God was watching. When earthly men choose not to praise and show gratitude, God Himself will be gracious and show gratitude towards you.

Our God is debtor to no man, and he rewards us for our actions and also rewards us negatively for our inaction, but a reward we will get. Spend time today to pause and look for an area where you can do some good. There are some things today that only you can do and this is simply because only you know about the situation or only you know how best to resolve/repair it. There is some good that must be done today and you are the best person to do it.

I conclude by saying this:

Don’t be weary in well doing (Galatians 6:9), it will be well with you if you are not weary.
